Team Ainsworth Head To The Tryweryn!

On Sunday team paddlers Ryan, Tom, Sam and Craig headed down to the Tryweryn in Wales to get back into the swing of things. Ryan was given the new hybrid construction paddles which are set to replace the black Nylon blades which we currently have in our range. The new construction is strong, light and powerful. They offer everything you could ask for in a paddle and they come at a great price too, I know that they’ll be my regular paddle for a while now! The new paddles will be on sale next season. Swaletastic

Enjoying one of Yorkshire’s finest with a nice amount of water in it. Lesson learnt from the day is to carry splits at all times as a snapped paddle meant an early walk off for myself. I was a tad gutted to say the least, as I was feeling on good form and enjoying the day having previously just paddled a huge Whitsundale beck into the Swale. So I passed the pole onto fellow team paddler Josh Litten.

Level on gauge = 1.5

Kent on Pole

Dropping into Force Falls

Dropping into Force Falls

Despite the recent storms that have been sweeping across the UK I hadn’t been in my kayak for over a month.  It wasn’t due to lack of offers, for some reason I just couldn’t get myself motivated.  So on Saturday with a good forecast I decided it was about time I got out.  The forecast wasn’t as predicted, plenty of rain fell but it had stopped at mid night.  This meant that the smaller upland rivers were dropping quickly and already down to low levels.  I don’t do low levels if I can avoid it.  So we headed straight to the larger lowland river Kent.  I knew this would be high as it rises and falls later than the upland rivers.  It also has a much larger catchment area.  Anyway, enough of geography lesson.

The run itself went ok, I could definitely tell I hadn’t been out for a month.  My paddling felt laboured and not as smooth as it can/should be.  I used far too many back strokes (1 would be too many in my eyes! Sign that you have messed up if you need to use one in my opinion) and missed my intended line on the L shape weir.  However, despite this I was still smiling afterwards.  To keep the smile going we went and paddled a rather high Leven to finish the day.

The Paddle I was using is an Ainsworth Creek glass 200cm 45.

Straight Glass Creek Paddle

Finally a paddle for the big boys.  The blade size is huge, with this size comes huge power on tap 🙂

All this for £149 and that’s with a carbon shaft.  Oh and it comes in a shimmering silver!

Not a waterfall in sight! (ish)

The weekend trip to Scotland had been planned well in advance, this normally means we will have no water.  However, on this occasion a solid forecast was in place.  Myself and Ewart travelled up Friday eve to Sam’s student digs in Glasgow with the intention of hitting the west coast early on Saturday morning.  After a few too many beverages this didn’t happen!  We eventually arrived at the Falloch around 1 o’clock to find it at a good level for a first attempt at the 7 dwarfs in the gorge.  For those of you that know me you will know I am about as useful as chocolate fire guard when I have a hangover.  So I had made an early decision to paddle/portage and run safety.  Sam and Ewart both styled the 7 dwarfs and ‘twist and shout’.

After the Falloch we realised that the majority of the rain had fallen towards central and eastern areas so we ditched the plan of staying in the Fort and headed back to Glasgow.  This time we did get up at a reasonable hour and headed North Eastwards and paddled the Blackwater (Perthshire) and the Braan gorge at good levels.  We planned to paddle in the same area on the Monday but we couldn’t be bothered to camp so we crashed at a friends place in Edinburgh.

Monday saw us with only 1 car but this didn’t matter as we planned on paddling the Tilt which is a walk in (sort of).  Despite not much over night rain to top levels up and the gauges being down Sam was confident that the Tilt would hold its level.  We were not to be disappointed!  What we found was a continuous gorgeous class 4 gorge.  Definitely now up there in my top 3 rivers, if you are up in the area I highly recommend you paddle it.

To finish the road trip off we drove back via the Falls of Dochart

Wet West Paddle Fest

A few Ainsworth paddlers headed up for the festival.  Saturday saw the usual runs of the upper and lower Moriston and the after party at the aluminium club.  Sunday for once brought a lot of rain (but the usual hangover was still there!:-( ) which meant the Garry didn’t have to be paddled.

Anyway a few pics and a vid from the weekend.

Favourite UK River:   It’s got to be trout beck in high water.

Favourite Non UK River:   The Rizinesse, a little bit of everything in isolated gorges in Corsica.

Little known fact about you: I find playing 20 question’s incredibly stressful!

The trees must of been thirsty?!?

It rained for a good 24 hours on and off in the Lake District but the rivers were empty on Saturday morning.  So after a quick look at the gauges team paddlers Ant Shaw, Sam Gregory and Rob Pilkington head over to the Tees.

Newgale Surf

Team paddler Ant Shaw packed the tent and the kayak and headed down to Newgale in South Wales.  He was blessed with 2 glorious sunny days out of the 3.  As usual the best surf day was the overcast day so no pics from that day.
